As you may know, there are several options here. In general you have the
choice of lowering the compression or using a bigger cam. You can probably
guess which I would choose. But if you lower the compression, why not use
351W heads? They flow a bunch better and will put your compression at around
9.3:1. Of course there's even a better choice with one of the aftermarket
aluminum heads like Edelbrock, etc. Somewhere around 60 cc chamber volume is
what you need. This is probably a more cost effective solution than properly
reconditioning a set of old Ford heads - 351W or 302. Plus, you save about
50# and aluminum heads are much more tolerant of high compression. Rather,
they require about another full point of compression because they lose more
heat than a cast iron head.
