Dennis, they can be restored. If not chipped, or in an area where the
chips are not visible, do the following.
1. Wash the pieces very well with soap and a stiff bristle.
2. Wet sand the pieces with 1500-2000 sandpaper till baby butt smooth.
3. Polish with rouge polish.
This will bring the luster back, but because this is Bakelite
(spelling), you will still have some brown in the black, so it will not
be shiny black, like the inside, but still look period and very nice.
If the broken chips are visible, glue with epoxy, sand off excess, or
you can use WeldAll, not the name, as I forgot, but this product have
been around forever, and it can be drilled, sanded, etc. Available at
McParts and everywhere.
Then paint with shiny black, making sure you have filled all cracks, as
anything under the paint will show through.
