I will comment.  The link you provided is to the MKI parts book.  The later
addition that covers the MKIA and II list two shifter rings 6100019 Chrome
and 1229984 Black with a note to use 1229984.  I will scan a copy and put it
up on the web.  I guess the original owners were right.
