Tom
Many years ago I had TigerTom rebuild my steering rack. There were
a number of broken or stressed parts in my steering that needed replacement.
There are safety issues involved with rebuilding the steering too. You do
not want it to fail at the wrong time.
Contact TigerTom and get his recommendations, he may still do
rebuilds if that's what is needed. I think his email is still
TigerTom@aol.com . If not, Tigers United or the TE/AE web site should show
his email address.
From your description I would say you just need new covers and add
lubricant and you're done. I have no idea about the O-ring, but that
should be a common part and easy to purchase.

Subject: Steering Rack Overhaul
I am started to go through my steering rack. The factory manual gives no
info
beyond the cover replacement and fluid refill and shim adjustment (if
needed).
CAT shop notes are cursory too. I never really drove my car before it came
apart, but I can report the following:
1. The covers were cracked, but the insides are clean and there is no sign
of
rust.
2. There was (some - nothing was dry) fluid inside and nothing screams
"wear."
3. The ball joints that are part of the steering arms seem "lightly snug."
There is no excessive slop, they can be moved with little pressure but
will
stay wherever they are moved to.
Other than to clean it up and install new covers and fluids should I leave
well enough alone?
Oh, I almost forgot:
A. CAT shop notes list a SR310-70 O-ring as a replacement for the pinion
shaft. Is there a readily available source for this (or any other internal
parts)?
B. IF I need to take the steering arms off (for whatever adjustments
necessary, if any) are the locking pieces needed the ones available from
CAT?
C. Just what is it I'm supposed to fix, adjust etc. and to what "settings"
are
the rack set to ???
Thanks to any who can help.
