clutch question

We installed a new clutch in Tigger and it isn't working correctly.  The
pedal moves half way to the floor before the slave ever reaches the arm.
The clutch engages when the pedal is barely off the floor.  Is it possible
we have reinstalled the slave cylinder incorrectly?  My mechanic claims
there is only one way it will fit, but I have my doubts we have done it
correctly.
