Steve,
  Knowing how hot it was today (my thermometer said 92 degrees here in
Thousand Oaks) that might be part of the problem. I have heard that gas
co.'s mix gas for certain seasons. If that is so, then it could be that your
gas is "out of season." The fact that your gas was boiling in the filter,
(and it would reason that the gas in the float bowls was even hotter) might
be the cause of your problem. Remember that boiling gas does not go well
through the meter circuits in the carb. It may be that you could squirt gas
out the accelerator pump injectors, but that is under pressure and the air
could have come out un-noticed (before the gas).
  Still could be ignition (and heat related), but the fuel issue should not
be completely ruled out for reasons stated. Your a real trouper doing the
daily driver thing.
