Just went through this and had to do the very same thing with dimpling my
headers after they were coated.
I used the Guys at Caps Bright Hot in Fresno so I am not sure how this will
work for you but what I did was get a big fluffy towel and laid the header
onto it on the floor or braced on a 2X4 under the towel. I then took duct
tape and covered the round end of my Ball Peen Hammer and then set it where
I wanted the dent and struck the other end of the Ball Peen hammer with my 3
pound sledge. It worked beautifully and created small dimples right where I
wanted them. The material never chipped and got only slightly marked. In
fact I took it back to the guys and they buffed out the marks and it looks
great. The fact that I beat the crap out of the pipes and it never came off
and still looks good was a huge value to me.
I would suggest that you check with your vendor to see how durable the
finish is that you went with. The other option is to grind away stuff until
they clear.
I used a special piece as an adapter that Dale A. has made that provided
TONS of clearance.
