Tony,
Same answer I gave you before.
The EARLY Ford 6 bolt aluminum bell housings not only fit the engine
block (they ALL do), and fit the transmission (they ALL do), and doesn't
require firewall modifictation (some newer models, I believe, may be
longer), and has the correct clutch fork pivot and arm (not so sure
about some of the later ones, but this is easily measured. BUT you will
need a new bracket to hold your hydraulic slave, or go to the internal
McLeod hydraulicly actuated throw-out bearing. This is illustrated in
Curtis Fisher's TREMEC 5 Speed article under Performance tips, which
also show the bell housing.
Bottom line, if they are NOT a different length, and they have not
changed the fork/pivot, any will do. Forget fork/pivot issue if you go
with the McLeod method.
The brackets were a weld-up construction, and the 289 Cobra's were all 5
bolt, so you either fabricate one, with a strut brace as on original, or
purchase a neat looking aluminum casting from CAT through their Members
Only Warehouse. (Or find a piece of a Mk II.)
I do believe you will need a new starter part number as well. Check your
starter part number listings for 5 bolt 289, or the 269 Fairlane, vs
later 6 bolt Fords at Pep Boys or Kragen.
