When (rather AFTER) I bought my Tiger I was looking around and saw that
'some' fluid had previously been leaking at the pinion seal. Further
investigation showed a pinion that moved like a spoon in soup (about 1/4").
I pulled the rear cover and found .035 endplay in the diff. where there
should have been a preload! Oh yea, and the case was holding about a pint or
two of water too (maybe it was there for cooling purposes). Even further
investigation found that the carrier bearing was not a press fit, but rather
.010 loose on one side. By all rights this should have grenaded years ago.
Your right, they don't make them like they used to.
The good news (LOL) is that in the 2 1/2 years I had the car I've driven it
all of about 800 feet (off the trailer) then backed it into the garage and
the wheel cylinder immediately leaked (no hand brake either). Over the years
I found the steering shaft to u-joint bolt so loose that center on the wheel
was about a quarter of a turn in either direction << _ >>. There is also the
ball joint that ressembled the pinion shaft for wiggle. The REAL SCARRY
thing is the PO drove this car to the place where I eventually picked it up
and apparently had driven it this way for a number of years!!!
I'm hoping that by the 3rd year I will actually be doing something from the
topside of this car. Maybe I'll even be able to drive it before the Arabs
stop selling us oil.
