Ahhh...the old Holley vs. Edelbrock/Carter debate! I love this one!
Pro Ebok/Carter:
1. No gaskets below fuel level, less leakage.
2. Aluminum...lighter.
3. Metering rods...very good, gradual fuel enrichment control, won't blow out.
Can change with only minor disassembly.
Con Ebok/Carter:
1. Fuel inlet at rear pass side...hard to route fuel line on most cars.
2. Fuel inlet is high...most air filters will not clear.
3. No internal throttle return spring...you have to have two on outside for
safety.
4. Poor design of fuel bowl...does not work well when cornering or decelerating.
5. Jets and metering rods expensive, hard to find.
6. Does not look racy.
Pro Holley:
1. New gaskets work much better than those in the past. Leaks are uncommon now.
2. Parts availabilty very good...gaskets, jets, power valves available lots of
places...gaskets and power valves at Pep Boys!
3. Secondary opening rate easily tuned with springs on vac sec models.
4. Power valves now warrantied against failure...only works if you buy new,
though.
5. Have return spring(s) built into linkage (one vac sec, two mechanial sec).
Only requires one extra spring on outside.
6. Fuel inlets can be on passenger or driver's side, depending on model. No
clearance problems with most air filters.
7. Dyno proven to make more power than most any other carb.
8. Looks racy.
Con Holley:
1. Zinc...heavy, tarnishes easily and quickly.
2. Power valves sometimes troublesome.
I like Holleys. Tried them all, and keep coming back to Holleys.
You may want to check out Barry Grant's line of Demon Carbs. They use "industry
standard" (Holley) parts, but seem to work better. They certainly LOOK better,
anyhow, and are competitively priced.
