As you probably know, the Mallory Unilites used an optical sensor and the
Pertronix uses a magnetic (Hall effect) sensor. The magnetic sensors are
much more reliable. Virtually every Ford built in the last twenty years or
so uses a "crank sensor", which is this type of magnetic sensor, for timing.
Yes, they do go bad occasionally, but overall they are pretty reliable.
Thus, there is no inherent reason why this type of unit should not be
reliable. Let us know when you find out for sure just what failed; i.e., was
it the Hall sensor or something else.
