Steve,
Since you've got the cooling system apart, check to see if the stock heater
valve shuts the water flow off completely when it's in the 'cold' position.
It should, and if it does (or if you can adjust it so it does) then you
don't need that extra valve, which will always end up being in the wrong
position anyway. If you have a heater core then you should circulate coolant
through it periodically so that crud doesn't settle in the core, valve, and
heater hoses. When I redid the heater hose stuff on my Tiger I removed the
shutoff valve the PO had put in (which was completely filled with sediment
and rust), replaced it with an '83 Honda valve, and had the core rebuilt.
The core had stretched tanks, either from being run at high system pressures
or  from freezing, and I had to pry it out of its cubby with a pair of
screwdrivers.
