I think you are right in that the spring loaded plunger
is caught on something. Before going the route of
going through the grill to unbolt the hinges try this.
Get about 8 to ten feet of strong cord. Fishing line
might work. With a friend work the string under the
back of the hood and then work into forward until
you snag the string. Sort of like flossing your teeth.
In fact dental floss may work.
Once snagged you should be able to pull the
spring back to unsnag it. This method works only
because the locking mechanism and plate is out.
