Story on Steve McQueen, "Bullit", and that fantastic chase scene.
Back in my new MG-TD days I used to hang around with a crowd that included
Bruce Kessler. Bruce was about my age
and "borrowed" his mother's XK120 and raced it at CSCC events. Didn't do
badly. His folks owned the then famous
"Rose Marie Reed" line of women's bathing suits. He had to work for them one
summer as a manufacturing manager,
and directed the cutting of over 1,000 bathing suits of the kind Esther
Williams wore, with that little flat
front piece. Unfortunately, he left out of the cutting stack all the crotch
pieces!! They left him alone after
that.
He got better and better in racing, promoting rides in faster cars from rich
owners, and paling around with Lance
Reventelow, son of the Woolworth heiress, and a Prince, and amateur racer who
went on to build the Scarab. So
that's how I knew them both.
When "Bullitt" was made, he had the connections and the reputation to land the
job of directing that entire
driving scene (watch the credits). With such a fantastic job, he got other
offers of a similar nature.
See what you can get by stealing your mother's car and loosing your father's
crotches (or was it the other way
'round??)
