If lead acid battery technology had received the same attention over the
last ten years that portable electronics batteries have, they'd weigh about
ten pounds, come with integral charging circuitry, and have about three
times the capacity of the series 27 batteries you can buy today. Mind you,
they'd probably cost about 250 to 300 dollars too, but some of us would
probably go for that tradeoff.
Actually, batteries themselves _have_ advanced over the years. You can now
buy them in ratings up to 1000 cold cranking amps, which is about double
what the maximum was 10 years ago. Like Jay says, though, the charging of
the batteries is still pretty crude, and if a little effort was spent there
(combined with deep-discharge prevention circuitry), the batteries would
probably last more than three years.
