Thanks to all who replied, as I had hoped you had better ideas than I did. It
did prove to be a poor power connection, although I am still not sure exactly
which one. It was a weird problem being partly random and partly due to how
many electical accessories I was runnning (brake lights pulled too much
juice). The Tach part had me confused but I have an MSD system and the rpm
signal is obviously not on the wiring diagram. I am still not really sure why
it was involved, but I refuse to pull apart my wiring to add it to the diagram.

A clean up of the contacts at the fuse block, suggested by some wise listers,
proved to work. Thanks for saving me some (more) headaches and money.
