Theo and Listers,
I just had y filter chromed and before doing it I wanted to ensure that it
was nice and straight. I looked carefully at the filter and discovered that
over time and tightening (or leaning on the edge of) the air filter had been
squashed top to bottom. The result was that the top of the filter was less
than ¼" from the top of the choke horn at the front side. One thing I
learned a long time ago was it is imperative to have free flowing air to the
carb. I took some wood 2x4s and arranged them so that they were configured
in a rectangle and laid the filter down on top of the wood. It was placed
such that the top surface was down and the underside was up. The housing was
supported on all edges with clearance between the driveway and the top side
of the air filter lid. I took another piece of wood and carefully drifted it
down from the underside drifting a little at a time. I repeated the process
for the bottom drifting the carb flange down while supporting the edge of
the filter bottom. The result is that I gained between ¼" to 3/8" clearance
for a good solid ½" to the top of the choke horn. The two alternatives to
gain choke clearance without this are buy a carb with the choke horn milled
off or get all of Theo's plans for his fuel injection and run a TBI.
