Tim, where are you located so that it snows so soon?

Anyway, I have taken the windshield off my MK1 and a 65 Alpine, and both
have the same shims that you describe with the hole where the stud for
the windshield mounts to the body.  

Both are unmolested windshields, as you can tell by the paint, etc. 
Also the windshield frames are of the same color as the body, even under
the rubber which has not been painted.

But, go with whatever you want to do, as it is your car.

PS - I have a measurement somewhere that show the distance from the
windshield to the rear door area, but of course this is the starting
point for adjustment of the door windshield, HT, and conv top.
