Folks, just a thought, when calibrating a speedometer
by decreasing the magetic field of the bar magnet by
the use of a Radio Shack Tape degauser, be sure that
you have not installed the speedometer in the dash.
You will uncalibrate the fuel and temperature gauge if
you get the degauser to close. I hold the degauser
a good 3 feet away from the speedometer (that is being
run on the bench by the drill press). Go slow because it
is a pain to have to remagnitize the bar magnet.
Major dissassembly is required to get to the bar magnet with
attached shaft.
I have mucked with several Alpine, Tiger and MG
speedometers. In several cases I found that the odometer
nylon gears were cracked. One speedometer had different teeth
as well. Anyone have a reasonable source for the odometer
gears ?
Another possibility is to simply buy a speedometer
from JC Whitney ( only 120 MPH available). I did this for my
Alpine. The speedometer can be mounted in the old Tiger or
Alpine case. Remove the glass; but retain the bezel. The JC
speedometer fits right up to the old bezel with the new bezel
continuing such that it almost appears to be a single bezel.
The JC is set for 1000 revs per mile. Couple of screws through
new holes hold the JC speedometer in the Alpine Case. It also
uses the US 5/8" connection. I simply pulled the end off of an old
US cable and replaced the end on the Alpine cable. My Tiger uses
the US Ford cable so no modifications would be necessary.
