While I'm sure that Al meant his comment as hyperbole, the numbers say that
the engine rpms at 60 mph with 4.27:1 ratio would be a little under 3600
rpm (ca. 3560). Not where you'd want to cruise all day probably, but well
below the top end of most motors out there. Moreover, this ratio would be
just the ticket if you had a 5-speed with a 0.75:1 top gear or thereabouts.
Some 5-speeds even have bigger jumps (e.g., 0.63:1), but I personally would
recommend more in the neighborhood of 0.75:1.
