Stu,
"Warning, Will Robinson, Warning:"
In California it has been illegal to sell garage door
springs without internal safety wires for the past 20
years. Surprised you could still buy them, or even a repair
kit.
But, you are doing yourself a big dis-service if you do not
replace ALL the springs, once one has gone. The others are
not far behind. I've used dual spring units for
replacement, and they seem to work a lot better. They come
with built-in safety rods, as do the bigger diameter single
spring variety. There are also special bottom end catches
that are adjustable in length. This allows balancing the
load on the springs, in case your mechanism or parts aren't
exactly positioned, and whose are?
Finally replaced the whole thing with a fold-up track door
last year because the metal jamb was wearing badly.
