Most applications of flared tubing in low pressure systems
do not use "double flares", but the ordinary "single flare"
you can make with the garden variety flaring tool. This is
a better seal for low to moderate pressures than compression
fittings, although they require more hand labor.
"Double flares" are used for high pressure applications,
such as hydraulic systems, because they are stronger and
provide better sealing at high pressure. "Bubble flares"
have similar claims, although I have now industrial
experience with these.
By far, a properly designed AN system is the superior high
pressure seal, and the very best for flexible tubing. AN
systems made up of a series of adapters is not as reliable.
Although you have had good luck with the compression
fitting, it is luck, and not inherent design capability.
Since you can still purchase both double flare and bubble
flare new steel tubing, and can even extend the length with
a coupling fitting, as is stock on the Tiger fuel line, just
at the floorboard/firewall area, there is really no good
reason for 'work-arounds' that may put your safety at risk.
