Firstly,
What does "RTV" mean?
Answer: "Room Temperature Vulcanizing"
If "Vulcanizing" throws you, see Spock
(Mr. not Dr.)
Second.,
Why doesn't ANY car manufacturer use it, except in
replacement of gaskets as a stick-um, or filler on the
engine?
Answer: It can never be removed satisfactorily for paint to
stick where ever it, or the sticky fingers have gone.
Third,
Why didn't Rootes use it?
Answer: Too much War Surplus burlap, canvas, moldy rubber,
and khaki paint was still on the market at bargain rates.
Some tar, from the war with Spain, was also available from
Navy surplus. During the War years conservation and
recycling was a patriotic duty. Tons of string balls, fat
rendering, used chewing gum, soup cans were available.
These revelations should answer most of your kid's questions
about why Lord Rootes did what he did.
