Another speedo related question

Hey, all:

Thanks for the responses to my previous post concerning the speedo drive
gear located in the tranny.  Now I have a new question; same car, same
tranny (late Mk1 with HEH-E box).  How many teeth should the gear on the
transmission side of the speedo cable have?  The gear that is on the cable
currently has 16 teeth but my friend thinks its been changed before, so he
can't verify that it is the correct gear.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance
