In a message dated 98-09-28 18:03:13 EDT, you write:

<< So my question is this. I'm considering a roller cam 302 as a
replacement for the 289 (either a freshened one from a salvage yard, or the
Ford SVO/SVT crate engine). If anyone out there has made this swap, I'd
appreciate any info they could share. Of particular interst to me is: >>

<Will generator bracket bolt on to later model heads?>
Yes.

<Where can I find the appropriate six bolt bell housing?>
There are six bolt, dual pattern bell housings out and about, kind of rare in
aluminum. I took a wide ear bell housing and we adapted it to the Tiger's
narrow ear pattern by drilling the appropriate pattern, welding bosses on the
back side and then tapping the bosses for the tranny bolts. Works fine.

<What about clutch slave cylinder adaptation?>
You need to either buy (Rick has them @ Sunbeam Specialties) or fabricate a
slave cylinder bracket. Another option is to install an hydraulic throw-out
bearing (McCleod or Tilton etc.) which is really the best set-up (regardless
as to what you might hear by those who have tried them, not set them up
correctly and then considered them a hassle). One word of caution: Most of the
six bolt/Tiger slave cylinder brackets available "pre-fab" are just aluminum
plate cut in the right pattern. They will flex too much unless stiffened with
perpindicular ribs.

<Does original flywheel have the proper amount of imbalance?>
No. The roller cam motors are 50 oz. while the earlier motors are 28.2. The
best option is to get a 4-bolt, early model dampener made to work in a 50 oz.
imbalance application. I think both Ford Motorsport and TCI make them now, but
I'm not sure. When I did my swap, I had to have a late model, billet flywheel
balanced out with a early model, hipo dampener on a late model crank! Kind of
a pain, luckily we had a late model crank lying aroung Tom Hall's garage.

<Are there any timing cover/water pump, starter motor issues?>
No. All the front dress off your 289 will bolt up, if I remember correctly.
Couple of things to remember: 1. The air passages in the late model heads need
to be plugged (no biggie) 2. The distributor gear needs to be swapped, or the
roller cam will eat it up pronto (also, the roller cam motors run a 351W
firing order) 3. The dipstick hole in the side of the motor needs to plugged.

<Headers or manifolds?
(Does anyone have a set of the cast iron Tri-Ys for the Tiger any more?)>
All Tiger headers and manifolds bolt right up. Tri-Ys you'll have to find from
someone who would like to part with a set (they really don't flow very well,
probably just as well off with stock manifolds or better yet a set of SS or
CAT tubular headers).

< Does
the short tailshaft housing for the T-5 put the shifter anywhere near the
original location, and what is required as far as drive shaft and
speedometer adaptation?>
The friendliest tailshaft housing for a T-5 swap would be one from an early
'80s AMC Concorde/Sprint. Even with this pretty unobtainable part, there is
some fabrication required in terms of rotating the trans on the bellhousing
(plate with offset bolt pattern). Contact STOA or Dale Akuzewski for details.

Good Luck and keep us all up to speed on your winter project!
