Dan, if I understood your post correctly, your crankcase breather smoke did
not occur untill you had disconnected the PCV hose to to attach it to a
vacuum gage. Some breather smoke is normal with PCV disconnected, even for
a healthy engine. Purpose of PVC system is to draw these crankcase
fumes/smoke into the intake manifold for combustion along with the fuel/air
charge.
You also mentioned that po "camed" the engine. Low vacuum at idle can be
normal depending on agressiveness of cam.
These comments don't fix your problems but don't assume your engine is tired
yet.
What did you mean by "pulled out PVC valve no guts" ? There should be a
piston inside the valve that rattles when you shake it. Is it stuck?
