Ole comes through!

Thank you, Ole, for butting a little sense into a chaotic
set of nomenclature for us 'murincans. I always knew that
the British went with the thread diameter, not the head
size, but your explanation of the advent of BSF (which the
British love so well that every bolt is fine thread), and
the dual wrench marking is superb. And now we, and
Professor Norman, knows why Norman is correct, even if he
doesn't know why.

Now I understand why the tools American tools don't fit
either the Whitworth, or the BSF system, as our system is
"AF" (across the flats). Your example ".438" = 7/16" AF,
.445 = 3/16"W and 1/4" BSF." Our  7/16 wrench (0.438 Across
Flats doesn't fit either the "3/16 W" or the "1/4 BSF".
0.438 does not equal 0.445, so it won't fit., and the next
size, 1/2 inch, rounds the corners.

So, since all Tigers have thread standards (one glaring
exception) and head standards equivalent American standard
thread and head sizes, (including the "normal" British
penchant for fine threads, everywhere but where Ford got
there first), a proper tool kit would not have those
dual-marked wrenches in "W" and "BSF", but marked "AF".

Does anyone want to buy a completely original, fine
condition, set of open-end 'spanners' that are only stamped
(cast) "W". It appears they work with "BSF" as well. Been
in the family since new.

Thanks, Ole,

Steve
