Greetings;
Thanks to Steve, Allan and Dave for their helpful comments regarding my
speedo head problem. Dave, the "on.ca" in my e-mail address stands for
"Ontario Canada". Maybe I should visit the other CA for some repairs! I
can't do that until our dollar improves somewhat (currently about $0.65 US).
I was talking to the woman at SS last week and she told me then that they do
not have any speedo cables at the moment.
I proceeded to disassemble my speedometer head and located the place where
the wear had taken place due to the VB cable. It was on the forward part of
the brass worm gear that turns the odometer gears. I made a spacer out of
thin plastic to help take up the slack and installed it. After reassembling
the gauge, I tried it out with my drill and it seems to work okay, at least
under 50 MPH, the fastest my drill will go. I put on about 3 miles with the
drill. I don't really expect it to last very long but I learned a lot about
speedometers in the process.
I think I will try what Dave did too. I will shorten and square off both
ends of the VB inner cable and install it in my old cable housing which was
the proper length. I've cleaned the old housing and wrapped it in expensive
electrical tape. I will wait to see what you guys think before I do any
cutting.
John
