Bruce,

I had this problem a couple of months ago, the part is still available over
the counter here in England, and it is common to the early Mini's as well!
It only cost me £5 or £6.

One thing to check is that you get the parallel thread version as there is a
tapered thread one available (I think its a 5/8ths thread, but check with a
rocket scientist!).
