In response to my suggestion that the casting number is on the block,
behind the starter motor, and can be used to identify a 260 3 freeze plug
from a 289 3 freeze plug (all 2 freeze plugs were 221 or 260), the

Please refer to any Ford Manual, or the popular HPBooks "how to re-build
your SMALL-BLOCK FORD", by Tom Monroe. This book is a practical
compendium of vital information, and used by many enthusiasts. I am sure
you recognize the title.
Pages 26-29 are filled with the information you lack. How to read the
casting numbers, and what they mean. All 289 blocks began with a C3, or
C4 for the casting dates in 1963 or 1964. The 260's were C2, C3, C4 or
C5 depending upon casting year 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965. There were no
1966 (C6) 260's. The next numbesr differentiated much more exactly.
260's were limited to C2OE-F, C3OE-B, C3OE-C C4OE-B, -D, and -E. That's
it. If there is any other sequence, it is NOT a 260.
Similar exact sequences exist for the 289 family, which includes different
numbers for HP289's, those machined for air-pump plumbing, 5 bolt, 6 bolt,
4 barrel intended blocks, etc.
I recommend the purchase of this book as it is full of valuable
information, and will settle a lot of misunderstanding, including whether
the 260 was an under-bored 289 which has sufficient wall to be bored out
to 4" (NOT).
I will agree that measuring the bore is a good way to know what re-builds,
or wear may have been experienced, or even if someone bored a 260 out
until the wall is paper thin, but the "provenance" of the block is
determined much easier.
