This is my first post (the above taunt worked) (if you are reading this and I
haven't sent it out into cyber limbo)
I must admit to just being a lurker up-to-this-point. I am somewhat ashamed to
say that the restoration on my 'beam stalled about 3 years ago, and thanks to
this list, I have renewed interest (if not time)
I should tell how I found my ray-of-Sunbeam.
I had a third hand '66 Shelby GT350 (sn 6s427) that I decided to sell about
15 years ago when they weren't quite so rare or collectable (I belonged to
S.A.A.C. and advertised it for $4995., finally got a taker for $4800. After a
few years I missed that car so much that I was looking for another fast Ford.
My co-worker was happily telling me that he finally sold his boat to his
friend....IF his friend can unload his car. For some reason I asked what type
of car that might be and was bowled over when he said "Sunbeam Tiger" I
crossed my fingers and asked "How much?" $1500. he said, and it is drivable,
sort of.
I called the man within minutes and made the 100 mile drive the next day. My
'beam had the top rotted off (and most of the interior with it) the steering
wheel was a ring of steel, but the darn thing ran real healthy.
A bonus. The owner had purchased lots of new parts for the car, including
exhaust.
I trailered it home on a snowmobile trailer (just)
I spent $5,000. to have the body work and paint done and did the mechanicals
and interior myself (lots to go though) I joined C.A.T. and followed some
advice. I bought an ''86 ? 5.0 HO carb motor out of a wrecked Mustang, got a
"matched"Performer carb and manifold. I just need time to put the LAT headers
on and slip the engine in, finish of the last 20 % (which will take 80% of the
time) and see if I can still fit behind the wheel (if not, there will be mods
made) I have gotten most of the parts to complete the job and look forward to
wheel hopping with the best of 'em.
I was reluctant to post to the list because I can't remember the year or mark
and am quite embarrased. I re-find the title and get her in the directory.
Thank you all for the informative posts I've read. It has re-lit the fire
under me and is forcing me to doing a time-shift to get back to the project.
