The current issue of Automobile Quarterly, Vol. 37, No. 3, has a nice feature
with a lot of good historical/background stuff about Doane Spencer. The
feature is called "This Deuce is WILD!" and it's about a '32 Ford roadster
that Doane bought and immediately started hot-rodding way back in 1944.
Anybody who ever met Doane, or who was fortunate enough to partake of his
presentations at Tigers United or SUNI events will appreciate reading where
some of his Tiger tricks were learned.
The sole Tiger reference comes towards the end, under a subhead of "The Last
Turn" where it says: "Even as his former hot rod was undergoing its various
changes, Doane Spencer enjoyed a very distinguished career as manager, chief
mechanic and fabricator for Chick VanderGriff's Holywood Sports Car racing
team where he helped pioneer the Sunbeam Tiger in SCCA racing with driver Jim
Adams."
It's good reading. I remember thinking to myself several times, "Yep. That's
Doane allright!"
