'use a gear puller to pull it off.'

Use the gear puller carefully, otherwise you'll crack or dent the plastic on the
wheel hub. I just finished repairing the dents on my steering wheel from a gear
puller.

Dean,

the only thing left is friction !

The splines can stick after 30 years, try pulling the wheel back sharply
or if you can find / borrow one, use a gear puller to pull it off.

Alternatively replace the nut and turn it until it is level with the end
of the threaded tube. Holding the wheel out, hit the nut carefully with
a soft faced hammer - MAKE SURE YOU DONT DAMAGE THE TUBE OR NUT.

                 _
               [I_I] <- 1" nut
I I <- threaded tube on steering column

wind the nut down till its level and then make sure you hit it squarely
so as not to damage the threads.

have fun.
