Ron,
Don't know about the aluminum pump, but the cast iron pump
can be replaced with any stock 289 pump if you do the following:
Remove the back plate from the new ( rebuilt) pump.
Support the shaft well and press the hub down on the shaft to the
apporiate distance. Go to the local K-Mart ( or similar) and buy a
new lawn mower blade ( which you probably need any way). In
most universal lawn mower blade kits, there is an assortment of
rings/washers. One of these is 5/8 id by 1" od.by 1/8" thick.
Install the ring over the shaft and then install the original fan.
Use oversize washers under the fan bolts to secure
the ring. Otherwise just press the hub back and change your
fan to a more modern and standard 5/8" dia mounting hole.
I have had no problem with the hub coming loose on 4 to 5
replacements over the years. This goes for the 289, Boss 302
and the present 351C.
