I have repaired my speedometer 2-3 times. The problems
have been: 1 shaft seized. 2. Wear that allows the magnet to touch
the aluminum cup ( causes the jumping around). 3. the nylon gears
for the odometer and tripmeter cracked from old age. If you can find
a good speedometer shop then use then and don't waste your time.
Note that if you put in a replacement speedometer cable that is a little
too long then the speedometer will were very quickly as pressure is
applied to the guts of the speedometer by the end of the cable.
For my Alpine I just put in a J C Whitney 3 1/4" 120 mph
speedometer. I took the chrome rim off the glass of the original
speedometer as well as the black shield and slipped them over the
3 1/4" case . I then drilled two holes in the original speedometer case
for the two studs at the rear of the 3 1/4" speedometer. The 3 1/4"
speedometer then fit inside the old case just fine. Note that I had to
change the speedometer cable housing fitting to mate up with the
standard US fitting on the speedometer. The Alpine speedometer cable
square end is larger than the US version. I used a Dremmal tool to grind
it down a little then silver soldered it to keep it the wires from fraying.
Grand total cost with shipping about $68. I am not conserned with the
odometer reading being incorrect as here in Floridia if you are already
over 100k miles you simply state that fact on legal papers.
