A lot of people were thanked (and some weren't) for working on what I think was
the absolute best United I've been to, but two people were left from the praise
list, Maria and Dennis Knapek of Eureka.
Eureka is not the sort of place you just stop by on the way home from work and
get things done. It's a hour plane ride and a five-hour drive from the Bay
area.
There had to have been a local contact to sort out autocross, auto show,
accomodation issues.
The funny thing is that one of the events, the major parts swap, was held at
Knapeks automobile electric shop, and I had a feeling that he was also
responsible for some of the logistical United stuff in Eureka., But when
talking
to him at the auto show, he just admitted to doing a few local things for the
event, downright modest about it. I had a hunch he did more, and Maria
confirmed
it. Having been a small part of the '93 Burlington, Vermont TE/AE United
planning
organization, I know the work involved to pull it off, and the Knapeks have my
vote for their part in making the United just great fun.
I would also like to thank those responsible for bringing their dusty Le Mans
race
car that couldn't make the grade to Eureka so that we could see all three
together. And thanks to Bo Cheadle for getting the Ken Miles Tiger prototype up
there, too. Sorry that he didn't make it up there himself.
