NOT TRUE. While the external size of the blocks are the same, the bores
differ by a quarter of an inch. The 260 has about the same cylinder wall
thickness as the 289 casting, and both of them are getting close to the
water jacket at 0.050 inch bore. Ford does not recommend anything over
0.060 bore, and this is chancey if the cores were not exactly aligned
during casting. Boring a 260 out to the MAX 0.060 is nowhere close to
the 0.250 required for a 289. Don’t believe anyone who tells you he did
this, unless the put wet sleeves in. A very expensive, and not to
satisfactory procedure. You can tell which engine you have by looking on
the block behind the starter. The codes have been posted by Norman, and
may be found in the book “How to Rebuild Your Small Block Ford”, Tom
Monroe, HP Books. C40E-6015-C is a 260 block built in the 63-65 period
with a 3.80 bore, 7 inch between motor mount holes, 3 freeze plugs per
side. 6015 means it’s a block. The 289’s would read C40E-60XX-C, -F,
C3AE-XXXX-N, C4AE, and C4DE. This covers ALL 5 bolter’s except HiPo.
