The 3 window soft top was a factory item.  My series 1, bought new in 1961,
was so equipped.

I believe the three window top was only a prototype and not used for
production cars. The three window top would have definitely given better
rear vision but I wonder if it was scrapped because it was more
expensive to make or maybe it wouldn't fold into the boot as neatly (or
maybe they didn't think it looked as good.)
