Rick,

Carb cleaner will do just fine, and it won't hurt the hoses.  The mesh
they are talking about is inside the oil filler entry cap on the left
valve cover.  Per my previous note, the PVC valve, hose, and connection
to the carb base plate is on the right valve cover.
