I've been in not-so-sunny Florida for a while, so I apologize if
someone's already told you about this, but here goes anyhow. I ruined a
NOS inside-screw amber lens a couple of years ago by forcing in an
original self-tapping screw to fasten the lens to the taillight housing.
And this had been taken back from South Africa specially for me by a
friend visiting there. Efforts to salvage the broken lens boss were to
no avail.
They are extremely brittle, very thin-wall, and cannot stand forcing.
When I got another (thanks Rick) I got one of those screwdrivers with
the sliding clip on it that holds the screw in place, stuck the screw in
the clip and heated it up with my propane torch. Hot, but not glowing.
Then I turned the screw into the now softened lens boss with no
problemo! It worked so well, I did the same thing to 3-4 NOS sets of red
lenses that I have that are still in the boxes.
Jay, don't chance it. this is good advice, in fact I sent it to Herb
Mosely for his CAT tech tips, although I can't recall if he used it or
not.
