I have a friend out in San Francisco who likes old VW's, so he has
this '68 Bug for his daily commute. It was smog check time, so he had
the Bug pre screened, and tweaked to be safely within the limits.
When he went for the real test, the Bug failed. Emissions? No. They
weren't just sniffing the exhaust. It failed because he didn't have a
"throttle positioner", that was on their list of equipment for the
car, but had never been there in all the years he owned it. He had to
order the part and get reinspected. (His whole story will be in
Electronic Design, Oct 24 issue.)
Now the question is, lots of CA Sunbeams are far from stock under the
hood. Are they all going to fail for carb swaps, conversions to
manual chokes, or engine swaps? Even if they are running cleaner now?
We don't have this here in MA yet, but they are working on it.
Opinions?
