The crown doesn't "grant" coats of arms: the various Kings-at-arms
recognize the coat of arms a person claims, provided certain very broad
criteria are met. Any American claiming a UK descent, for that matter, can
do the same, though the fee is several hundred dollars (and you thought
Rootes Group ownership was the ultimate in commercial snobbery! Hmmph.)
The hound in the coat of arms is a Talbot Hound, thus solidifying the marque
and family, though I honestly don't know which came first, the name for the
car, or the coat of arms. The title dates, I believe, from 1933.
