Regarding Steve Wickland's observations on the spring insulators from Sunbeam
Specialties, I have used them on at least 8 cars with no problems. Tom Hall
also uses them on all his front suspension rebuilds ( to many to count ),
and Dale Akuszewski at Dale's All British uses the Sunbeam Specialties
insulators in most cases. If he wants to lift the front end higher he uses
the CAT insulators. The SS insulators are on his race car with 450 lb./inch
springs and has never had a problem.
Some care is needed for installation. Most people are simply disconnecting
the lower ball joint to drop the a-arm and the putting the insulator on the
top of the spring and jacking it back up into place. Since the a-arm is
tilted on the crossmember, cocking the spring, the insulator drags on one
side and can be pulled over the top of the spring. To install without
problems, simply tape the insulator with electrical tape in 4 places to the
top of the spring. Then lube the insulator with rubber lube (liquid
dishwashing soap works fine) and inside the crossmember tower where it will
drag. Then reinstall the spring and insulators.
