Hey, gasoline is dangerous stuff! It was probably considered safer to pump
air into the tank than to try to pump gasoline out of the tank. There is an
early Rolls-Royce that I have seen at the BCU show in Morraine Valley that
has a pump in the dash that they have to use to pressurize the tank before
they can start the engine. Once the engine is going, it pumps the air in for
you. But a racer would not want to waste the HP to drive a pump ;-)
