Thanks, Grenade. The consensus at work was 4140 ("go
with hi carbon if you don't care about aesthetics").
We'll see exactly what's in stock/scrap.  To impress
the Thickos, the little brake drum screws on the race
car are A286 (they were in stock and fit!).
