=)
no really, mom and dad would take me to the end of the long straight and told
me to stay put. gave me a stopwatch(still in my toolbox!) and bought me a
program (the kind that had a fill in the blank lap chart) and i used to sit for
hours and watch the racing, while the crowd partied.. i remember one
particularly hot trans am meet, (boy those champion spark plug challenge
gremlins were ugly but fast back then), when it was all over i found dad being
ill by the tire of his old brown econoline. he had a sheet of plywood mounted
on top of the van so people could climb up on top and watch (mom even fell off
the van once after too much boones farm). Then there was this guy i would play
frisbee with between sessions..he would never spill a drop of beer...ive got a
bunch of 8mm movies of the old nationals and the can am's dad took spliced
together, great cars i race against and see now at the track, and i'm sure the
occasional clips of the flashing drunk women between cars going through the
esses didnt effect me much, nor did that strange burnt organic smell that was
in his van for days..yich... what great inspirational impressions of racing in
the early 70's! then years later, i find myself being one of those great old
cars i used to watch while i got sunburnt.
