Greg: Your response was well thought out and clear...and surely, I enjoyed
it. I also had the privilege of reading Don and Jack's response as well.
Without replicating their feelings and sentiments...I have chosen to respond
to you as you addressed me.
You quoted me: "Vintage racing is a matter of ....style". I can only
assume, if I may, that you are asking for a meaning. If so...let me take a
moment to convey my thoughts.
Style....generally means a characteristic manner of expression. For vintage
racing....same thing....to distinguish a particular type of racing from
say... contemporary professional racing or even SCCA racing. The
characteristics of vintage racing might include: respect for the racing
rules of the organization/venue, being safety oriented and conforming,
having a driving conduct that displays close, competitive racing without
contact, and having a lot of fun both on and off the track. Perhaps there's
more.. but that's off the top of my helmet!
Most importantly...I wanted to mention that I really like racing against the
Spridgets..and usually request that I am in the 1A group at SVRA and HSR
events... ( Jack knows this well)...mainly because my cars are stock engined,
drum braked, originals...that get in the way of the faster 3C group... and
happen to fit in perfectly with the 948s, 998s and 1275s Spridgets and Minis.
Enough about me.
That's part of the problem here. This forum has gotten too "me, me, me"
oriented. Perhaps it needs to be more "we, we, we" dialogue oriented.
I also said in the same breath: "vintage racing is too fragile to be
treated casually..." Why would I make such a statement? It has already seen
its financial success and peak...probably two, three years ago. It's now up
to us to ensure that our hobby will be able to continue with all of us...as
the beneficiaries. That's gonna take a lot of effort and understanding...
with some real appreciation for what we have and how easy it is for it to
fade away. Jack mentioned this in an earlier post. He's right on the money!
He knows what he's talking about. It takes a lot of financial success to
maintain a racing organization these days.
Greg, you or any one else couldn't possibly be aware that I too...have spent
the last six months working with Brian and James Redman on some new concepts
to strengthen and improve their existing dates/venues and to find new ones
for their own vintage racing organization. It isn't easy...there are damn
few answers right now. I volunteered to help them.. because I believe in
Brian Redman and what he has done for the vintage effort.
To that end....I would like to see the Vintage-race@autox.team.net continue
on for the benefit of the general audience....keeping in mind that many
hundreds of enthusiasts living abroad also share the same enthusiasm on this
particular thread.
Team-thicko has its own forum...continue to enjoy it.. use it for whatever
purpose it pleases everyone... but why impose a particular dialogue on others
that don't care to be included? Why send out duplicate and triplicate
messages... if one website will suffice. Isn't that fair to ask?
It all goes back to a vintage style ... There is no right or wrong. We can
all enjoy ourselves....race together or race apart....and with some equal
respect for each other. I certainly can do that...and will! Et vu?
