OK racers,
Can someone explain to me why all of the racers want to use Straight cut gears
in their transmissions? Straight cut gears (or spur gears) apply the torque
load to only one tooth on each gear at a time, where helical gears (such as
are commonly used in manual transmissions) apply the torque load to two to
three teeth at a time. Thus the helical gears have less of a tendency to get
damaged, where the spur gears take a beating.
So what's the attraction? (Plus straight cut gears are whiny!)

Or is it just the way in which they are engaged, Dogs vs conical synchros?
