Back when my Spridget ran...
I made my battery hold down out of pvc pipe.  I just cut a 1/4 section out of 
the circumference for the length of the battery so it would hold snugly to the 
corner of the battery.  Non-conducting and less likely to split than wood, 
since I like to over tighten things. ;-)
