Geez, Kate, you paid him $30 for 30 seconds labor and that was $20 dollars
LESS than everybody else? At $3600 per hour for him, those other guys must
be a tad high.

When one is fortunate enough to find a business whose owner has a good
work ethic and believes in customer service, stick with them and let all
your friends know about them. Go to them for the minor services such as
oil changes, rather than using Walmart, if you don't do them yourself.
You might pay a few dollars more, but you just might be helping the guy
to still be in business next year when you really need him.

I took my Chrysler to a highly recommended shop to have the head gasket
replaced. Since I had planned on doing it myself, I had all the
necessary parts ready to go. A broken back changed my plans. Since the
timing belt must be removed in order to replace the head gasket, I
expected that to be included in the cost, or at least not more than one
hour's additional labor. He wound up adding $275 additional to replace
the timing belt. I was not pleased.

I began searching for a new shop. The one I selected was one that I
needed to use for the first time in an emergency, My Cherokee lost its
mind (brain) when I went to start it on my way home from work. I called
the shop and he arranged for a tow, already suspecting the reason my car
wouldn't start. The nearest brain was three days away, so he pulled one
out of his own car, installed it in mine, and said I could use it until
mine came in. When I went back, I paid the cost of the part plus $30 for
about 30 seconds labor. Since then, I have learned that his shop rate is
$20 less than everybody else in town. Also, if a job takes less than an
hour, he doesn't charge for a full hour.

The fact that his parents owned the business before him might have
something to do with his practice of customer service, but whatever the
reason, I plan to steer as much business his way as he is able to handle.
